And, it’s easy to understand how a coat with stripes and spots could camouflage well into natural surroundings. Research done by feline geneticists Carlos Driscoll and Leslie Lyons at the beginning of this millennium confirmed five genetic clusters, or lineages, of wildcats from various parts of the world (such as Africa, Europe, China, Central Asia and the Middle East) and dating back some 10,000 years to be the ancestors of today’s ubiquitous domestic tabbies. If your pointed cat is somewhere really really warm the coat colour will remain lighter. The tabby pattern is determined by the agouti gene, which causes the individual hairs to have bands of light and heavy pigmentation, and the tabby gene, which denotes the type of tabby patterns, namely stripes, blotches or spots of hairs of solid color. If it’s really really cold where you are your pointed cat will darken even faster. Once they are out in the world the white will slowly fade from the coldest parts of their body first. Pointed kittens are born completely white, because inside of momma cat’s belly they are all nice and warm. That’s because the point colouration is a partial form of albinism which reacts to temperature. With age pointed cats usually darken all over their body, showing more of their “true” colour that lies underneath the white. The darker the base colour is - and seal (black) is the darkest possible - the harder it is to actually achieve this clear contrast! That doesn’t mean that all pointed cats look like that in reality. The “ideal” pointed cat has a bright, clear, creamy white body without any markings in order to show off the points with maximum contrast. This is very helpful! She is a seal tabby point (some of you might know this colour also as seal lynx point). Owner: here she is! Enjoy!īlack smoke with ghost markings (classic tabby) Here are a few examples of quite extreme black smoke with classic tabby ghost markings (+ scroll to the end for my boy Faolan <3). Personally I think all smokes look fantastic be it with or without ghost markings, but at least for show cats ghost markings are a big “no-no”, because they are supposed to look solid and not like a tabby, which makes sense. Ghost markings tend to fade if not completely disappear with age. They are especially common in smokes and usually better visible when the cats are kittens or still young.

Sometimes the tabby pattern is not fully surpressed and it shines through. like solids - which will hide that tabby pattern from being visible. If the cat is a tabby + silver it will be called “silver tabby”.īUT sometimes we can see a smoke cat (solid) clearly showing tabby markings! So what’s going on here? All cats are in truth tabbies.

“Smoke” means the cat is a solid colour + silver. ) However let’s just talk real quick about the proper terminology, because a “tabby smoke” is by definition not possible. Yes, I have because one of my own cats (Faolan, see below) is a black smoke with an underlying classic tabby pattern.
